A life for Parasport
The triathlon was his first life: Wolfgang Schattauer competed in over 100 events, qualifying five times for the World Championships over the Ironman distance in Hawaii. Then, in 1999, a devastating cycling accident during a training ride: Schattauer now suffers from paraplegia and has been in a wheelchair ever since. But you rarely find the parasportsman in a wheelchair. Most of the time he is on his handcycle, training or competing. In 2006, Schattauer won his first world championship title on the road, two years later he won the gold in the individual time trial at the Paralympic Summer Games in Beijing, and in 2012 he added two bronze medals to his Paralympic medal collection in London. Four more gold medals at world championships followed, and he is also a 13-time Austrian champion.
